Double Degree Programme „Eastern European History – Global and Regional Perspectives”, in cooperation with HSE Saint Petersburg
In cooperation with the Department of History at HSE St. Petersburg (HSE SPb) the Department of Modern Eastern European History at Göttingen University introduces the Double Degree Programme “Eastern European History – Global and Regional Perspectives” as part of the MA Eastern European History.
The National University Higher School of Economics is amongst the Russian Federations’ leading research institutions. The cooperation agreement between the SMNG Göttingen and the HSE’s Department of History is in place since 2017.
- Programme start: winter semester 2021/2022 (October 10th 2021 at Göttingen University, September 1st at HSE SPb)
- Standard period of study: 4 semesters (at least one at HSE SPb campus)
- Degree: Master’s degree “Eastern European History – Global and Regional Perspectives” with Double Degree GOE/HSE SPb
- Course languages: English/German (Göttingen), English/Russian (HSE SPb)
- Requirements: appropriate Bachelor’s degree, English proficiency at B2 level, Russian proficiency at B1 level (to be documented until 2nd or 3rd semester)

The programme is expected to commence in winter semester 2021/2022. Students from Göttingen spend their first two semesters at Göttingen campus and their third (and, upon request, fourth) semester at HSE SPb campus. Students from St Petersburg already spend their second semester at Göttingen campus. The more structural concept of the programme is meant to foster a stronger interchange between the students of both institutions. This way students are encouraged to expand their individual interests and approaches as well as language skills by making use of tandem relationships.
Both institutions desire a unification of their strengths and, by means of cooperation, pave the way for an international, interdisciplinary, and practically oriented Double Degree programme. Students in Göttingen and Saint Petersburg will profit from the lecturers’ expertise who concern with questions of recent global historiography as well as Imperial history and thus will implement impulses of cultural studies and non-European regional studies. Thus, the intertwining of regional processes and transnational influences are as paramount to the study as the manifestation of history in object and infrastructures as well as the representation of history through manifestations.
