FAQ - Placement test

The placement test is the admission requirement for taking German classes. Its results enable us to assess your level of language proficiency. This way you can choose the appropriate courses of our program.
You do not need to take the test if you have already successfully participated in a class at the lectorate/at the Institute of Intercultural Communication (IIK) or if you hold an official language certificate (like DSH, TestDaF, Telc, Goethe etc.) or if you want to take the basic course A1.
The placement test consists of five different cloze tests and takes about 30 minutes. You can only take the test once. If you repeat the test only the first attempt will be used for assessment.

  • The placement test takes place at the beginning of each term. Click here for current testing dates).
  • The test can be taken in the media center of the ZESS (Goßlerstraße 10) from Monday to Thursday from 10 am to 4 pm and on Friday from 10 am to noon.
  • You do not need to register in advance.
  • If you do not have a student ID (e.g. as an employee of the university), please contact the DaF office (Käte Hamburger Weg 6, room 0.105).
Your result will be shown to you immediately after the test (points and level of language proficiency).
Choose your classes from the course program and register on StudIP first and in the first class session afterwards (for students and PhD students with a student ID) or register directly in the first class session (for employees and visiting scholars without a student ID).

If you have any remaining questions on the placement test, you are welcome to send us an e-mail.
Please specify whether you are a student or an employee of the university.
