Prof. Dr. Gayatri Rathore


Gaytri is an urban ethnographer, interested in studying “encounters” and “exclusion” within the urban spaces.

She was trained at the Centre de recherches internationales (CERI), SciencesPo Paris. Her doctoral dissertation looked at the marginalisation of Muslim-majority neighbourhoods in the Walled City of Jaipur, through a focus on the politics of heritage management and the politics of municipal waste collection and sanitation.

She is currently working on two separate research projects: first, the privatization of municipal solid waste management in Jaipur and its impact on the lives of sanitation workforce, both Hindu Balmikis and the Muslim Bhistis. The second project looks at a Sufi dargah in Jaipur to study religious interactions and relations with the Other.
