As part of the interdisciplinary joint research project "Sustainability as an Argument: Sufficiency, Efficiency and Resilience as Parameters for Anthropogenic Behaviour in History", the ancient historical subproject examines discourses and strategies of sustainability in ancient Greece. Greek texts do not use the term "sustainability". However, the question is how the Greek poleis was able to sustain itself in such a spatially limited natural environment for over a thousand years. Which norms, strategies and social discourses may have set limits for using the natural resources and therefore supported a long-term stabilization?
