The University of Pretoria (UP) was founded in 1908 as a subsidiary of the Transvaal University College in Johannesburg. Today the University is the largest in South Africa, with 9 faculties and 1 institute, which was expanded from 1917 to 1919 (the Faculty of Business Administration and the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS). The UP offers its almost 50,000 students the choice between 130 Bachelor / Diploma courses and more than 1300 additional courses (masters, etc.). The University boasts Nelson Mandela as one of its honorary doctors. The UP has seven campuses located in and around the capital, Pretoria. The main campus, Hatfield, has six faculties, whereas the Sandton campus houses the GIBS. Additionally, the university has a separate sport science institution, as well as various other sport facilities.

The Department of Economics has a number of research areas/faculties including:

Given that the cooperation with the University of Pretoria is conducted on a departmental level, only master students of the Economics Department (International Economics/Development Economics) with a focus on development economics are eligible to apply for this exchange programme.
