Responses to the debate on the UN Global Compact for Migration

On 10 December 2018, 164 states adopted the United Nations Global Compact on Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. This so-called Global Compact has been the subject of a controversial and emotional debate in recent weeks, and not only in Germany. In a press release, CeMig migration scholars criticize that right-wing populist voices and conspiracy theories now far outweigh a differentiated and objective debate about the opportunities and shortcomings of this document.

Read more detailed statements (only available in German) on how various scholars assess the Compact from their respective research perspectives and how they assess the public debate. We have also compiled scientific publications, press articles and blogs with statements by our colleagues, which we recommend for further reading.

We also take up this topic in our lecture series "Root Causes of Forced Migration: Interdisciplinary Insights and Political Challenges". All interested are cordially invited to attend the lectures.
