Training program

Qualifcation concept

The qualification concept encompasses six components. The first four components are related to the study program. The course overview can be found here.

(1) Compulsory courses in economics, including empirical methods
(2) Elective courses with a strong focus on globalization and development
(3) Participation in research seminar, presentation in brownbag seminar and GLAD workshops
(4) Participation in the competence training including soft skill training
(5) Field visits for all interested students
(6) Internships for all interested students

Other qualification measures

  • Integration of international students: Both universities have established procedures in this respect by the International Office and offer free German language courses to get students easier adapted to daily live. Examples are a Ph.D.-buddy program where fresh international Ph.D. candidates are teamed up with experienced German students, common events for international students organized by the IOs or specialized trainings.
  • Field visits for all interested students: every student will have a field visit of 4 weeks on average during the first half of studies. We organize field visits either via our own research projects conducted in developing countries or via research partners.
  • Internships for all interested students: We will offer every interested student an internship (4 to 12 weeks) at institutions of development research or cooperation which are close to her/his research interest.
  • Conference presentations: We will support our students in presenting and discussing their work at outside forums. As soon as presentable papers have been written, i.e., during the second year, these (still unfinished) papers can be presented.



Supervision concept

Doctoral students are assigned to a personal supervisor from the first day. The supervisor is one of three advisor who define the thesis committee. One or two advisors may be externals.

The first year is mainly characterized by compulsory course work and the definition or sharpening of the research focus.

The thesis will be written in the form of 3 to 5 papers. Depending on the topic and further circumstances, papers may have different length, originality, rigor and quality. In any case, our benchmark for a successful dissertation is that some of these papers (per dissertation) can make it to competitive conferences and in the end to leading refereed international journals.


Competence training

To prepare doctoral candidates for their future career and to provide them with the full range of tools we offer competence trainings in and out of the regular curriculum.

The Competence Training on Academic Research is conducted by all applicants and includes research, writing, presenting, publishing, project and time management, grant proposal writing, intercultural competence training, ethics etc. Students are offered to visit courses of the GGG in Göttingen and LUH´s Graduate Academy in Hanover which competently address respective elements of the academic research training.


Career perspectives

Due to the ongoing globalization and development process, there will be plenty of demanding jobs being related to this change in the world economy. Future jobs of successful RTG doctoral students will be mainly in four areas:

  • Academic career in various research and training institutions around the world
  • International organizations (such as the World Bank, IMF, UN organizations, regional development banks, OECD, etc.) that are part of the globalization and development process
  • National institutions in developing or developed countries in various fields, such as policy making or development institutions
  • Private sector offers plenty of opportunities for the RTG graduates, including jobs in consultancy, strategic development, or jobs in all kinds of firms that work in an international environment
