The town of GöttingenThe town of Göttingen is located in the far south of Lower Saxony right in the center of Germany. Of its about 130,000 inhabitants, about 25 % are students. The University was founded in 1737 as the centre of Aufklärung. Its founder was one of the firm links between Great Britain and Germany being Prince-Elector Georg August of Hannover and later King George II. of Great Britain at the same time. The conference venue is the former first refectory of the Georg-August University, which was recently renovated and was reopened as a conference site in February 2016.
The huge student population has shaped Göttingen, providing an enormous selections of pubs, bars and restaurants in the city centre close to the venue.
