  • Brief Description: The goal of this workshop is getting to know different departments and their functions in a company and reflect about whether related jobs could be a good fit for your interests and profile. PhD students and postdocs with a background in natural and life sciences are usually not educated in economic thinking and hence often don’t know how enterprises create values and what different departments contribute to the company’s economic success.   • Brief Description: The goal of this workshop is to improve grant writing skills, learn how to structure and write a successful grant application and how to choose the right funding call. One of the most challenging tasks in science is getting continuously funded with creative and convincing proposals. Therefore, organizational and writing tools have to be learned early in a scientists’ career. The aim of this course is to provide postdocs with an opportunity to build their understanding, skills and confidence in writing and evaluating their own grant proposals to get funded.   • Brief Description: The workshop deals with how to write a professional application. Participants will learn about the requirements regarding form and content of CVs and the respective differences between academia and industry. They will reflect about how to convey their strengths and motivation in response to a job advertisement, but also how to approach speculative applications. Moreover, participants will train their self-presentation skills in the job hunting process, including self-presentation on career fairs, conferences and in interviews.   • Brief Description: The first part of this workshop focuses on the application documents. In exercises the participants will reflect their individual achievements so far and learn how to convincingly present them in the CV as center-piece of every application. Analysing real job ads the participants will practise how to write cover letters that create the desire to meet the author. They will get advice on how their determination for a specific career path can be reflected in CV and cover letter and what other application documents to include considering differences between jobs in science and industry. The focus of the second part lies on job interviews and covers questions such as how to react upon the invitation, how to prepare for the interview, the interview itself and how to deal with it afterwards. After preparatory exercises the participants will practise giving examples of skills and abilities. They will be primed for specific situations when confronted with awkward questions or unexpected challenges and practise these in training sequences. This Online-Live-Workshop is highly interactive and combines various methods such as online presentations, video discussions and group exercises in the plenum and in break-out groups as well as individual offline exercises. Young scientists are increasingly confronted with raising demands for quality improvement and excellence in everyday scientific life. Strategic career planning and individual solutions can help meet these expectations and successfully pave the academic path. To stay in the academic system as a scientist permanently in most cases a professorship is the only option. This workshop is directed toward young scientists aiming at pursuing an academic career. We will focus on the requirements towards professorship and look at different ways to gain the necessary qualifications.
