OmegaCAM - the Quarter-Gigapixel Camera at the ESO VLT-Survey-Telescope (Commissioned and in its warranty phase)

OMEGA Cam

Fig.1: Horizontal pointing of the VLT Survey Telescope makes the camera installation to the mirror cell visible. The camera itself (hidden by the large cryostatic vessel and cabling) is located at the rotating centre surrounded by numerous electronic boxes and large cable wrap for camera and CCD control.

'1st Light' took place March 2011 and meanwhile the camera went into regular operation at Paranal Observatory. A sample of images taken with the Quarter-Gigapixel camera has been made available to the public on the ESO webpage.
