Markus Meckel, foreign minister ret.

Held a lecture on the topic “Twenty Years after the Fall of the Soviet Union: The European Union – A Success Story?“

Markus Meckel was a guest speaker at the Euroculture lectures series "European Identity in the Wider World". He gave a presentation entitled "Challenges for the European Union and Transatlantic Relations:An Issue for Germany."

Markus Meckel was born on 18th August 1952 in Müncheberg/Brandenburg. From 1971 until 1978 he studied theology in Naumburg and Berlin. He spent the years between 1980 and 1988 in training for the ministry and working as a pastor in Vipperow/Müritz, Mecklenburg. From 1988 until 1990 he lead the ecumenical meeting and educational institution in Niederndodeleben, near Magdeburg. From the 1970s onwards, he was involved with the political opposition in the GDR. Along with Martin Gutzeit, he initiated the founding of the Social Democratic Party in the GDR (SDP). He represented the SDP at the Central Round Table Meetings and was a member of the East German Parliament from 18th March until 2nd October 1990. From April until August 1990 he was Germany's Minister of Foreign Affairs and he was a member of the German Bundestag from 1990 until 2009.
