Project C04

C04 Study and control of surface photochemistry using a local excitation microscope
The photochemical reactivity of molecules on surfaces is significantly influenced by their adsorption configuration as well as the local surface structure. Atomic-scale properties such as steps, kinks, or point defects determine local excitation and reaction paths. The combination of a localized femtosecond light source with a low-temperature ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscope enables the study and manipulation of energy pathways on the molecular level. This project addresses the combination of field, current and optical excitation in a scanning tunneling microscope for the investigation of chemical reactions on the smallest scales. Layered systems will allow for a precise control of electric fields and, thereby, the local reaction environment. In cooperation with project B08, we will implement a tailored ion spray deposition technique for the preparation of complex molecules on various substrates, from isolated molecules to monolayer systems.
