B1 Agriculture-nutrition linkages in localized food systems

SP B1 analyzes agriculture-nutrition linkages focusing on smallholder farmers in developing countries, who account for a large share of the world’s undernourished people. How can smallholder systems be made nutrition-sensitive? What is the role of agricultural diversification and agroforestry for improving nutrition outcomes? How to design effective interventions that increase adoption and outcomes of nutrition-sensitive agriculture? These questions will be addressed using primary micro-level survey data and economic experiments. A particular focus will be on gender roles, female empowerment and intra-household equity as well as on seasonality and resilience to weather extremes and climate shocks.

Possible dissertation topics:

  • Agricultural diversification and nutrition outcomes in the context of seasonality and climate adaptation
  • Agriculture-nutrition linkages, gender roles and intra-household equity
