Research Interests
I am interested in macroecological and biogeographic patterns of biodiversity and processes that shape it, particularly speciation and extinction. As dispersal of species is related to both speciation and extinction, it is one of my core research areas. I investigate the links between dispersal and speciation, as well as between dispersal and extinction at different spatial and temporal scales. In one line of research, I do so in the deep past on an evolutionary timescale (several millions of years) with biogeographical and macroevolutionary models. In a second line of research, I want to improve our understanding of species’ present-day extinction risk and how humans have altered natural processes that have been going on for millions of years. Ultimately, I want to bring these lines of research together to understand if and under which circumstances we can use information from macroevolutionary and macroecological analyses to improve present-day understanding and future predictions.
