Carbon turnover and competition processes in the rhizosphere of deciduous forests with contrasting tree species diversity PDF

We investigate fine root mass in broad-leaved deciduous forest stands differing in tree species diversity. Fine root bio- and necromass data was collected along a biodiversity gradient (pure European beech stands to mixtures with mainly five tree species). Vertical and lateral fine root distribution patterns were evaluated. Additionally, morphological fine root characteristics were analysed.

Hypotheses:

  • Total fine root biomass increase with increasing tree species diversity due to spatial niche separation in mixed stands.
  • Vertical fine root distribution differs between tree species.
  • Seasonal fluctuation of fine root mass is higher in pure stands than in mixtures.
  • Fine root production increase with increasing tree species diversity due to higher fine root mass in mixed stands.
