Project

Modelling carbon and nutrient turnover of different tree species within mixed stands

The project aims to understand the effect of biodiversity on the turnover of trees within mixed stands. The goal of the simulation is to explain the causes of these effects. The carbon and nutrient turnover at different sites under different tree species is simulated by adapting the EXPERT-N modelling software to forest systems. Different groups of trees of different biodiversity are analysed to explore the effect of biodiversity on the turnover.

Another main goal is the inclusion of the morphology of the trees in the simulation. The model should use the 3D structure of the trees of a cluster and describe its effects on the turnover of the cluster. Laser scan data of the canopy and information on geometrical distribution of the roots are used for this analysis.

Methods

  • Measurement of soil model variables
  • Modelling: EXPERT-N
  • Simulation of carbon and nutrient cycles of soils and forest stands
  • Validation of model results
