Hecke, Carola: Using Images for Fostering Intercultural Communicative Competence and Visual Literacy In Foreign Language Teaching: Visual Studies As a Key For a Competence-Oriented Use of Images in Te

This doctoral thesis explores the question of how and why to use images in a competence-oriented foreign language classroom. It turns to the discipline of Visual Studies as a useful approach that can answer questions hitherto remaining unanswered when it comes to the use of images in the didactics of foreign languages. The thesis gives answers to these questions – among others, it offers a definition of visual competence and presents competence levels – and presents a methodical framework for using images in the competence-oriented teaching of foreign languages.
