On the occasion of the 50th birthday of Prof. Stephan Klasen, PhD, Chair of Development Economics of the University of Göttingen, development economists of the University organized an international conference on 23-24 June 2016. Around 150 academics discussed topics affecting developing countries and research on poverty at the Paulinerkirche. One of the participants was Prof. Dr. Amartya Sen, a professor at Harvard University and a Nobel Laureate, as well as the doctoral supervisor of Stephan Klasen.

In addition, Stephan Klasen received a special award from the University's Board of Trustees for his internationally recognized research on development economics and poverty, at the University's annual meeting in December.

On 1 July 2016, Prof. Dr. Krisztina Kis-Katos became the new Chair of International Economic Policy. Before joining the University of Göttingen Faculty of Economic Sciences, she was an "Akademischer Rat" (Assistant Professor) at the University of Freiburg Chair of International Economic Policy. The main areas of research for the 41-year old are in the areas of applied empirical economic research, focusing on topics such as the relationship between globalization and development and political economy. Krisztina Kis-Katos succeeds Prof. Dr. Renate Ohr, who retired from the Faculty in October 2016.
