Proposed test format

For domain-specific competences, the proposed item format is real tasks in computer-simulated work environments. Simulations refer to operation procedures and working processes, authentic working tools and workplaces, and individuals’ knowledge, abilities and experiences as a basis for dealing with simulated processes at different levels of complexity. The main advantage of real tasks in computer-simulated work environments is that tests can be conducted in a relatively short period of time, which is required for large-scale assessments.

With simulations, complex and interactive processes in the world of work can be mapped in a complex way; providing a tool for measuring vocational competencies closed to reality. Authentic simulations take into consideration the situatedness of competencies and have a positive effect on test validity and objectivity; different task formats can be integrated to illustrate interactions, situatedness and individual activities; multimedia and interactive stimuli (video, animation, authentic work tools) have a positive effect on test motivation, which enhances data quality.

For cross-occupational and basic competences, other formats (e.g., paper and pencil) might be feasible.
