She then spent 10 years working at Bell Labs in New Jersey before moving to Germany. Cynthia went first to the Max-Planck-Institute for Metal Research in Stuttgart and then to the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology where she studied ion-solid interactions, grain growth, mechanical behavior, and atomic transport in metal films and small structures, primarily using in-situ methods. She joined the University of Göttingen as a professor in 2007, where she continues her research in nanoscale materials and in-situ electron microscopy.
