The Institute for Theoretical Physics at the Georg-August-University Göttingen/Germany is seeking for applications for an

ESR PhD position

in the field of theoretical particle physics/particle physics phenomenology. The contract is a fixed term contract with a total duration of three years. For the first two years this corresponds to a full-time position (100%, 39.8 hours per week) with payments according to the regulations of the Horizon 2020 Programme of the European Union within the scope of the Maria Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) for Innovative Training Networks (MSCA-ITN). For the third year a part-time position (66,66%, 26.53 hours per week) is offered with salary in accordance with the German federal state public service salary scale TVL E13.

Project description
The first two years for this post are funded by the Horizon2020 Maria Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network MCnetITN3: Innovative Network for Monte Carlo Event Generators for LHC Physics. The aims of MCnetITN3 are to: develop the next generation of Monte Carlo event generators; train a new generation of event generator developers and; play a central role in the analysis of LHC data. In addition MCnetITN3 has an ambitious training programme of schools and short-term studentships designed to train our user base in the physics and techniques of event generators. More details about the network’s research and training programmes can be found at http://www.montecarlonet.org.

The post holder at University of Göttingen will undertake a research project in an area of physics related to the development of the Sherpa Monte Carlo event generator. In particular, they will continue the development of concepts and algorithms to automate the evaluation of higher-order electroweak corrections in the hard-process and parton-shower simulations.

Applicants Profile
- Excellent scientific degree in Physics (Master, Diploma)
- Good knowledge of particle physics
- Ability and motivation to pursue high-quality research, including the publication of results in scientific journals
- Good analytical and computer programming skills
- Both written and spoken fluency of the English language
- Working experience in the field of high-energy particle physics is an advantage

For this post the Marie Sklodowska-Curie mobility rules apply. The fellow may not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for more than 12 month in the 3 years immediately before the date of recruitment.
