Beschreibung | Egg and sperm formation is crucial for reproduction in nearly all eukaryotes, including humans. Egg and sperm are formed during meiosis, in which the diploid chromosome set is reduced to a haploid set. This requires the homologous chromosomes to come together and pair in a full lengthwise manner for the installation of DNA structures called chiasmata. Chiasmata hold the homologous chromosomes together until meiotic division, ensuring correct chromosome segregation. The forces that bring homologous chromosomes towards each other and drive their pairing are not well understood. We discovered that actin and actin accessory proteins localize to the nucleus in early meiosis and actively promote the pairing of homologous chromosomes. The role of nuclear actin machinery in the process of homologous chromosome pairing will be presented in this talk. |
