Advanced technologies are fast adopted by researchers and research communities and enable new ways for generating, processing, structuring and collaboratively using data. This does not only have a profound impact on the amount of data produced, but also on the variety of data formats and the velocity of data generation and handling. With digital technology, new scientific questions can be addressed and old problems can be tackled, for which the technology has not been available so far.

In the near future data scientists will become indispensable for research and scientific work in all disciplines worldwide. You, as a young researcher, should know what data science means, what the implications for scientific inquiry are, and what skills a data scientist will need to be productive in a world deluged by data. This summer school can improve your existing knowledge and skills and pave your way in becoming a data scientist. It aims at giving you the chance to not only learn new methods and technologies on a theoretical level but also to apply those in interactive and collaborative sessions.

Program

This two-week summer school will be an extremely interesting, interactive, and intensive course. It aims at advanced MA- and beginning PhD students from any discipline who are interested in learning about the many facets of data science.
In a series of lectures, the participants will be introduced to the field of data science from different vantage points. Practical sessions will allow students to apply different theories and methods in practice, both individually and in teams.


Topics will cover

  • Data management, Data sharing and Data publication
  • Open Science
  • Legal and ethical aspects (e.g. Licensing, Copyright)
  • Infrastructures and Platforms (HPC, CloudComputing, CloudStorage)
  • Mathematical and Statistical Methods
  • Data processing I (eg. Text, Image and Database Analysis)
  • Data processing II (eg. Visualization & storytelling)
  • Application Examples



All topics will be complemented with exercises from real world examples.
In addition, there will be short presentations, interactive sessions and team work, enabling participants to present and discuss their work and ideas.

The Social Program includes different events such as sightseeing tours, hiking trips or a joint barbecue.



ECTS

Upon successful completion of the program including the submission of a term paper, participants will be granted 4 ECTS credit points (3 for participation and one for a final report).

Credits in ECTS can only be obtained after successful completion of the work-load required. Student workload in ECTS consists of the time required to complete all planned learning activities such as attending lectures, seminars, independent and private study, preparation of projects, examinations, and so forth. International participants who wish to receive credits for attending short term programs should check transfer policies with their academic advisor or the international office at their home institution.

The Summer School will take place at the historical building "Alte Mensa", located at the Wilhelmsplatz in the center of Göttingen. Map of the area



Fees & Funding

Participation is free of charge for the selected candidates.

Due to funding by the University of Göttingen the Summer School will be able to offer travel grants for international participants. The travel grants are paid as fixed country-specific travel allowances.

The Summer School also provides free organized accommodation in double rooms for the selected international participants.

All other individual costs related to the participation in the summer school (food, etc.) have to be covered by the participants themselves (or by their respective home institutions).



Application

This Summer School is open to 35 participants. The Summer School addresses advanced MA and early PhD students of all disciplines. For application please submit the following documents written in English:


  • A tabular CV including knowledge of(digital) methods, tools and software
  • A Letter of Motivation (max. one page) including statement of actual and future research plans



Please fill in the application form online (including CV and Letter of Motivation). After successful submission of the application you should receive an automatic confirmation via email.
Notification of successful applications by the beginning of March.
If you attend, you will need to prepare an 5min oral presentation introducing yourself and your work.
