How to get to Göttingen

Arrival by plane / train
The closest airport is Hannover (HAJ) another possibility is Frankfurt (FRA), which is the largest German airport and therefore easiest to reach.
If you arrive at Hannover airport you have to take the S-Bahn (a local train) number S5 (the only one at the airport, the airport has its own station) which takes you to Hannover central station from where you can take an express train to Göttingen (ICE-Intercity Express, takes about 30 min.)
If you arrive at Frankfurt, the airport has its own train station with direct connections to Göttingen. Please note that not all connections are direct. For some you will have to change at Frankfurt central station (the ICE-Intercity Express direct connection takes about 2 hours to Göttingen)
You can buy your train ticket online before your journey at:

Deutsche Bahn

The page is available in English and allows you to buy train tickets using your credit card. You can also check the possible connections in case you want to buy your ticket here in Germany. The instructions about what else you require for the use of the online tickets can be found there. We do not recommend to buy a special offer ticket as those are bound to one train and you have to buy a new ticket if you miss it.
Buying the ticket in Germany is rather unproblematic in Frankfurt airport, where there are service counters and vending machines. In Hannover airport however there is only a travel agency (located in the Departure area of Terminal B, open from 10am-6pm) where you can buy tickets for the national trains. Vending machines only exist for the local train and you would have to buy another ticket at Hannover main station to go to Göttingen (Online tickets are valid for all trains unless specifically mentioned otherwise).
