The Göttingen Center for Molecular Biosciences (GZMB) is a joint initiative of more than 30 research groups, affiliated with the Faculty of Biology and Psychology, the Medical School (University Medicine), Faculty of Chemistry, the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, and the Faculty of Forest Sciences at the Georg August University. All of these research groups work in the field of molecular biology.

The major goals of the GZMB are:

• Intensification of research activities by the formation and advancement of collaborative research centers, international research training groups or research groups.


• Common utilization of high-end technologies.


• Support of young scientists by the establishment of independent junior research groups.


• Establishment of novel curricula with the aim of offering integrated teaching for students from all cooperating faculties.

In 2003, a new laboratory building, the Ernst Caspari Haus, was finished that houses eight different groups of the Medical School and the Faculty of Biology and Psychology. Seven of these six groups are novel appointments.

These newly established research and teaching facilities became a center for forthcoming activities of the GZMB. The Ernst-Caspari-Haus accommodates the administration, as well as lecture and seminar rooms for the International Master's/PhD Molecular Biology Program, which is an initiative of the GZMB groups together with scientists from two Max Planck Institutes in Göttingen. Since 2008, the Ernst-Caspari-Haus also accommodates office space and training facilities for the Göttingen Graduate School for Neurosciences, Biophysics and Molecular Biosciences (GGNB), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) in the framework of the Excellence Initiative by the German Federal and State Government to promote science and research at German universities.
