In 1974 the Institutes of Geography, Mineralogy and Geology along with the museum were combined into the Faculty of Geoscience and Geography at the north campus of the university. Today the faculty with its 12 departments and about 1200 students is recognised as one of the strongest interdisciplinary oriented research facilities in Germany.
