The University of Göttingen owns impressive collections of items, some of which are of considerable international significance. The initial creation of these collections goes back to the 18th century, when the founders of the University wished to render their new University attractive, especially to the students, by equipping it with appropriate material. Since their establishment, the museums, collections, and gardens have grown steadily in scope, both as a result of purchases and the assembling of specimen, and also through bequests and donations. A catalogue has been published by Wallstein in which the Directors present to readers their collections, museums, and gardens (ISBN 3-89244-452-8).
