Handelsblatt ranking for 2013: Research achievements in economics

In the current Handelsblatt ranking, German-speaking economists were evaluated based on their research strengths. The University of Göttingen Department of Economics moved up in the ranking by 11 positions, placing 13th after Kiel University and before Heidelberg University.

In terms of individual rankings of academics, both Professor Dr. Holger Strulik and Professor Dr. Helmut Herwartz were ranked among the top 20 economists (ranking 12th and 17th place, respectively). Professor Strulik holds the Chair of International Economics, while Helmut Herwartz is the Chair of Econometrics. Additionally, Professor Dr. Thomas Kneib, the Chair of Statistics, ranks 42nd place in the ranking for the top-100 economists under 40 years of age.

The Handelsblatt ranking aims to provide an overview of the research strengths of economics in Germany as well as the best German economists abroad. On behalf of the publication, the research group at the ETH Zürich evaluated over 1500 journals. In this process, they captured the number of papers that were written by German-speaking economists, as well as in which journals. The publications were weighted and calculated based on the reputation of the journal. From the rankings of the researchers, an additional ranking list was calculated for research faculties and institutes. The Handelsblatt ranking is published every two years.
