Digital Forest
A real-time forest monitoring system
for climate change impacts

Climate extremes such as the 2018/2019 summer droughts and heat waves have severe impacts across sectors and are therefore key challenges our society has to face today. Monitoring the impact of such events on forest functions such as CO2 sequestration, growth, or water cycle is of pivotal interest. Recent developments in sensor technologies, data-integration, and artificial intelligence (AI) are opening unprecedented, yet underexplored, opportunities for environmental near real-time monitoring. Digital Forest will develop a near real-time forest monitoring concept and capitalize on latest advances in AI for predicting major impacts of climate extremes. By considering the interrelations between ecophysiological responses and structural stand properties Digital Forest will enable establishing widely usable early warning systems.
