About Richard Courant

Richard Courant played a key role in the mathematical community in the early to late 1920s in Göttingen. Apart from being an exceptional mathematician with a large circle of students, he was also a sedulous organiser. Due to his personal initiative, the Mathematical Institute was established in Göttingen in 1926.

As a result of increasing political pressure, Courant immigrated to the United States in 1933. At the New York University he set up the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. Richard Courant died in 1972 in New Rochelle (USA).
