Research Funding of the Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture (MWK)
In addition to the basic funding for Lower Saxony's universities and non-university research institutions, the state of Lower Saxony also supports project-related research with the state budget's funding resources and from the Volkswagen Foundation's "Niedersächsisches Vorab" program. Part of the Volkswagen Foundation's annually available funding resources are prescribed and allocated to the state of Lower Saxony under the auspices of the "vorab" program. For this purpose, the Foundation's Board of Trustees generally receives proposals for the funding allocation during the summer and autumn. The State Government of Lower Saxony previously endorsed these proposals.
State budgetary resources are allocated to the "Pro*Niedersachsen" program. Funding support is firstly available for research projects in the humanities, social and cultural sciences; and secondly, for other scientific lectures and events from all disciplines.
"Collaborative Research Units and Research Priorities" are funded under the "Niedersächsisches Vorab" program to establish high profile research priorities on an international level. In addition, funding is granted to "New Research Fields" that are strategically highly significant and promote the academic profile and structural development (start-up funding). In the funding line "Recruit & Retain" support is allocated to the recruitment and retention of particularly important academic positions and long-term "Funding Programs and Calls" incorporates current, yet also several long-term research policy initiatives.
