International Ph.D. Course in Medieval and Early Modern Studies

In the winter term 2001/02 the University of Göttingen introduced an interdisciplinary Ph.D. course in 'Medieval and Early Modern Studies' at the Faculty of Arts. It is associated with the Center for Medieval and Early Modern Research (ZMF) and the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) on the subject of 'Values and Change in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period'. The Research School was established as a cooperation between the Göttingen Max-Planck-Institute for History and the Center for Medieval and Early Modern Research, the Department of Medieval and Early Modern History at the University of Göttingen as well as the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel. The program is interdisciplinary and integrates subjects covered by the Faculties of Arts, the Departments of Theology and Economics, and the Faculty of Law.

Thirty graduate students are accepted per year. Admission requirement is: Magister, Staatsexamen, Diploma, M.A. or comparable degree from a recognized international institution of higher education. The course was set up for graduate students who have focused on medieval or early modern research topics in their qualifying work.

It takes six semesters for students to complete the curriculum, which is geared toward requirements in medieval and early modern studies. During the course, students are mentored by an academic committee. Students should spend up to six months abroad. The state of Lower Saxony supports IMPRS with eight Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg scholarships - almost € 140 000 a year.
