In 1974 the Institutes of Geography, Mineralogy and Geology along with the museum were combined into the Faculty for Geosciences and Geography at the north campus of the university. Today the faculty with its 14 departments and about 800 students is recognised as one of the strongest interdisciplinary oriented research facilities in Germany. This is demonstrated by our numerous research projects and our successful engagement in the nationwide “Initiative of Excellence" (
