Institution: Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Crop Sciences
Date of Announcement (dd.mm.yyyy): 18.01.2024
Application Deadline (dd.mm.yyyy): 25.02.2024

The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Crop Sciences, at the University of Göttingen is seeking to fill a permanent professorship with civil servant status (grade W3 NBesO) at the earliest possible date:

W3 Professorship in Plant Diseases and Crop Protection (f/m/d)

The post-holder will be expected to address issues pertaining to the emergence, spread, and integrated control of plant diseases in crops in both research and teaching, encompassing a wide scope. Additionally, they are required to showcase and cultivate a research profile, with a focus on one or more of the following areas:

  • Disease impact of pathogens in key cropping systems
  • Evolution, spread and epidemiology of major pests in relation to environmental factors and production measures
  • Development of sustainable crop protection strategies, integrating natural and preventative control mechanisms and innovative approaches
  • Evaluation and risk assessment of crop protection strategies
  • Influence of multiple stresses and stress interactions (biotic/abiotic)
  • Resistance mechanisms and phenotyping of crops
  • Pathogen invasion and re-emergence
  • Digital technologies for plant protection

Research should be clearly related to agronomic issues and have an international focus. The inclusion of crops and production systems under field conditions, and the consideration of biotic and abiotic factors in agricultural ecosystems is preferred.

We are in search of an exceptional, team-oriented researcher with a strong international publication track record and expertise in teaching, along with a proven track record in securing and executing research projects aligned with the candidate's career stage. The research should center on agricultural topics with a distinct international profile. We anticipate an interdisciplinary approach and collaboration not only within the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences but also with other faculties and members of the Göttingen Campus. This collaboration may include participation in DFG collaborative research projects or similar formats.

The professorship will contribute to teaching in the Bachelor and Master programs of Agricultural Sciences (Crop Sciences), in the Master programs of Crop Protection, Sustainable International Agriculture, Integrated Plant and Animal Breeding and Biodiversity, Ecology and Evolution and in the Faculty’s doctoral program. The successful candidate is expected to teach in both German and English (after a training period, if necessary). The University of Göttingen emphasizes research-oriented teaching.

Appointment requirements are laid down in § 25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act in the currently valid version. In the case of an appointment to a professorship, junior professors and other members of the University of Göttingen can, as a rule, only be considered for an appointment if they have changed their university after obtaining their doctorate, or have worked scientifically for at least two years outside the appointing university. As a Public Law Foundation, the University of Göttingen holds the right of appointment. Details will be provided upon request.

Applications from scientists from abroad are explicitly welcome. The University of Göttingen strives to increase the proportion of women in areas where women are underrepresented and therefore explicitly invites qualified female scientists to apply. The University has committed itself to being a family-friendly institution and supports its employees in balancing work and family life. The University is particularly committed to the professional participation of disabled employees and therefore welcomes applications from persons with disabilities. In the case of equivalent qualifications, applications from disabled persons will be given preference. In order for the University to be able to protect the interests of the applicant, information about a disability or equal status should already be included in the application.

Candidates are invited to send their applications in English containing a curriculum vitae, certificates and transcripts, a publication list, a record of teaching experience, a meaningful research and teaching perspective, and a list of successfully acquired third-party funding no later than February 25, 2024 to the Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (Prof. Dr. Stephan von Cramon-Taubadel) via the online application portal:
