Molecular genetic detection of Yersinia pestis and Bacillus anthracis in bone material from an medieval skeletal series from Lübeck.

Molekulargenetischer Nachweis von Yersinia pestis und Bacillus anthracis in Knochenmaterial einer mittelalterlichen Skelettserie aus Lübeck.

The medieval "Black Death", raging in Europe from 1347-52, caused the death of one third of the european population. Yet the question which pathogen was the main agent causing the "Black Death" is still in discussion. Two of the most feasible pathogens are Yersinia pestis and Bacillus anthracis.
Thus the aim of this master thesis is to design a multiplex PCR that is able to detect DNA sequences specific for Yersinia pestis and Bacillus anthracis in historical bone material, in order to acertain weather Yersinia pestis or Bacillus anthracis caused the "Black Death".
