Abstract of Research Project

Becoming an Oil State: Processes of Social Transformation in Western Uganda

The research project is aimed at understanding processes of social transformations within a young oil state from an ethnographic perspective. It tries to identify how international, national and local organisations and actors come together and induce these processes of change. And how they thus negotiate the significance of the oil industry for the local communities in the oil region and the country as a whole. The research is focused on Uganda but is affiliated to the DFG project "Significations of Oil in Niger and Tschad".
