Poverty and Rural Welfare Effects of Agricultural Biotechnology in India

Abstract:
While several studies on the impacts of agricultural biotechnology and genetically modified (GM) crops in developing countries have been carried out recently, there is still uncertainty about the wider technological effects on rural welfare and developments of impacts over time. We use comprehensive and representative panel data from smallholder cotton farmers in India to analyze impacts and impact dynamics of insect-resistant Bt cotton. In particular, we analyze short and long-term effects of this technology on cotton yield, chemical pesticide use, profit, farmer health, and household living standard. Earlier work under this project has also analyzed poverty effects of Bt cotton using a micro level social accounting matrix and multiplier model. Furthermore, potential impacts of Bt eggplant and attitudes of Indian consumers towards genetically modified foods have been analyzed.
