Major Research Interests

Our aim is to understand how proteins can act as nano machines to remodel lipid membranes and thereby drive fundamental processes for life such as fusion and fission. Which tricks do proteins use to overcome or alter the associated free energy barriers of these processes? Can one exploit these tricks to improve drug delivery systems or, alternatively, prevent viral infections? We tackle these questions by applying state-of-the-art molecular dynamics simulation techniques. In addition, we search for new ways to exploit Nature's inventions for the sake of material science (bio-inspired materials). For example, we computationally explore new types of bio-surfactants or try to design functional hybrid assemblies between bio-materials and solid surfaces or synthetic polymers.
