Beschreibung Observing the metabolic pathways of key molecules such as pyruvate or acetate in living cells is of high interest to understand what changes in the cells in case of disease or under external stress. Especially pyruvate is excellent for these investigations since the molecule, the end point of glycolysis, is a starting point for several new metabolic pathways. However, it is a particular challenge to track these small molecules directly and in real time without affecting the integrity of the cell. Nuclear magnetic resonance offers us the toolset needed to track molecules on an atomic level. However, pyruvate and acetate are usually too low concentrated to acquire significant signals. To overcome the lack of sensitivity we make use of hyperpolarization by para-hydrogen. Here, we present a new class of compounds that can be light activated after hyperpolarization and become metabolically active. The activation is achieved by the irradiation with UV light after hyperpolarization and we show that important molecules such as polarized 1-13C-pyruvate and 1-13C-acetate can be derived in the process.
