Details When a particle crosses a barrier despite lacking the energy to overcome it, the phenomenon is called quantum tunneling. Tunneling is highly mass dependent and large isotope effect is a signature of it. A tunneling rate is generally temperature independent, but it also can be temperature dependent in special cases.
In this talk, I present such a phenomenon for a system of CO molecules, absorbed on a NaCl (sodium chloride) surface. The CO molecules “flips” on the surface through “activated” tunneling giving rise to a temperature dependent tunneling rate with an “activation energy” (which is obviously less than the barrier height) and a peculiarly high isotope effect. Theory suggests that a single state to state transition between the two wells in either side of the barrier opens the “gateway” for the molecules to tunnel. This “activated” tunneling rate through the “gateway” is orders of magnitude faster than the ground state tunneling rate and can have a significant contribution in cold interstellar chemistry.
