Short description
This programme builds upon the foundation of a successfully completed degree in law from a university abroad. Its aim is for students to master the fundaments of German law, to develop the skills to conduct legal work according to the methods that are common in this field and to treat an area of law in-depth in a Master’s thesis.
With the support of the supervisor (a professor or lecturer of the Faculty) a curriculum is created. This curriculum must fulfil the following requirements:

  • It must comprise a total of 24 hours a week (12 hours a week per semester).

  • Two areas of law must be selected from different main areas: These areas are Civil Law, Public Law, Criminal Law, basic courses (Philosophy of Law, History of Law, etc.).

  • The Master’s thesis must cover a topic originating from one of the two selected areas of law

Any changes in the curriculum require approval from the supervisor and the Faculty’s Students’ Office (Studienbüro).

For admission to the final Master’s examination, the following academic achievement is required:

  • two beginner’s tests (one in each of the selected areas of law)

  • a seminar paper or term paper pertaining to the legal field of the Master’s thesis

  • a fourth test (written or oral) that may be selected by the student.

  • The programme ends with the three-month Master’s thesis and a one-hour oral examination. The first examination subject is in the same field of law as the Master’s thesis, the second part of the examination must focus upon the second area of law selected in the curriculum.
