Chinese (M.Ed.)

Course description

The subject "Chinese as a foreign language" includes intensive language training in spoken High Chinese as well as didactic training.

An intensive training in High Chinese in word and writing is offered, building on top of the language level of the previous BA degree programme.

Continuing on from the intensive language training, the course places great value on teaching the foreign language didactics specific to Chinese teaching in Germany.

A total of 29 credits are allocated to the subject-related course of study, which can be earned by attending the following subject-related and subject-didactically oriented modules: "Modern Chinese VI", "Specialist Chinese Didactics", "Research on Specialist Chinese Didactics", "Modern Written Language II".

Language requirements before the start of studies

Applicants for the subject Chinese as a Foreign Language whose mother tongue is not modern High Chinese must have an adequate knowledge of High Chinese. Sufficient language skills are proven by passing an examination at level 5 of Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì (HSK); the proof must not be older than two years when applying for admission; instead of proof of an HSK examination, the required language skills at level 5 of HSK can be proven by successful participation in the Georg-August-Universität's practical language aptitude test in accordance with the following provisions:

  • The aptitude test takes place at least once within two semesters; the dates will be announced in a suitable manner in good time.
  • The aptitude test comprises a written examination (90 minutes) and an oral examination (approx. 15 minutes).
  • The applicant must be able to understand and edit oral or written texts related to the study situation and to write such texts himself or herself. This includes the mastery of approx. 1800 characters (short and long characters), in detail the following proofs:
    1. Listening: The applicant can understand the main points of speeches and presentations if he or she is familiar with the subject. She or he can obtain the main information from radio or television programmes on current events and on topics from her or his field of profession or interest, provided that standard language is spoken.
    2. Speaking: The applicant can give a clear and detailed oral presentation on numerous topics from his/her fields of interest. He or she can explain his or her point of view on a topical issue and indicate the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
    3. Reading: The candidate can understand the main content of complex texts on concrete and abstract topics; he or she can read and understand articles and reports on contemporary problems in which the writers have a particular attitude or point of view.
    4. Writing: The candidate can write clear and detailed texts on a variety of subjects of interest to him or her. He or she may include in an essay or report information or arguments and counter-arguments for or against a particular point of view. She or he can write letters in which the personal significance of events and experiences is made clear.
  • The board of the East Asian Seminar of the Georg-August-Universität decides on the details of the test, in particular the form and deadline for registration as well as the dates of the test, and announces this in an appropriate manner.
  • The aptitude test can be repeated if the candidate does not pass it.
  • Stay abroad during your studies

    In order to be admitted to the Master's thesis module, students must prove that they have spent at least six months in a country where Chinese is the official language of the country in which they are studying.

    Language requirements during studies

    Students must be able to prove their knowledge of a second foreign language in order to be admitted to the Master's thesis module.
