The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Göttingen invites applications for a permanent professorship with civil servant status (grade W2 NBesO) at the Department of Turkology and Central Asian Studies effective at the earliest possible date:

W2 Professorship of Modern Turkology and Central Asian Studies (f/m/d)

The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to teach and conduct research in Modern Turkology and Central Asian Studies.

The candidate’s publications should be internationally visible, as well as outstanding, and they should demonstrate research expertise in at least one of the following areas: history, law, religion, politics, society, gender, the history of knowledge, language, literature, or other aspects of Turkish-Ottoman and Central Asian culture. A thematic emphasis in at least one of the following fields would be welcome: secularism, religious phenomena, cultural history, migration, nationalism, minorities, gender, transregionalisation/globalisation, or knowledge transfer.

Active knowledge of Turkish as well as knowledge of the Ottoman Turkish language or of a Central Asian language are prerequisites. The successful candidate must either be proficient in German or be prepared to learn it. They should be prepared and qualified to teach in English.

We are looking for a committed scholar with profound theoretical and methodological knowledge who can collaborate with colleagues across the disciplines. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the faculty’s main research projects as well as actively participate in cross-faculty research networks. The successful candidate will also be responsible for maintaining and managing the study programmes in Turkology while contributing to the development of interdepartmental study programmes. The post-holder will be further expected to make efforts to enhance attractiveness of these study programmes by implementing relevant measures across departments and/or university-wide. The University of Göttingen attaches importance to research-oriented teaching.

Appointment requirements are stipulated by Article 25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act in the most current version of that law. As a rule, junior professors and other members of the University of Göttingen that have obtained their doctorate from this university can only be considered for a professorial appointment if after the completion of the doctoral thesis they have transferred to another university or worked for a minimum of two years as a researcher at another institute of higher learning or in science elsewhere. The University of Göttingen is a Public Law Foundation and thereby entitled to award professorships. Details will be provided upon request.
