The PhD programme "Geography" is based on a research focus on "Resource Analysis and Assessment of the Geosphere" in the context of geographical research on human-environment relations. The doctoral students benefit from a number of international collaborative projects in which the Institute of Geography participates.
The general theme associates process mapping and modelling, creation of material balances (water, air, sediment, carbon, nitrogen and pollutants), the reconstruction of past environmental conditions and the analysis and modelling of the consequences of the use of interventions in biogeochemical cycles.
The social science methodology is included in the context of human ecology, political ecology, and institutional analysis and resource use conflicts. At present, the Institute of Geography is involved in several international collaborative projects.
The doctoral programme in Geography is captured under the umbrella of the Georg-August University School of Science (GAUSS). The GAUSS is responsible for PhD students and supervisors from the five faculties of Biology and Psychology, Chemistry, Geoscience and Geography, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Physics.
Working on research projects towards their doctorate the students are supported in the development of scientific networks in an international environment on the Göttingen Campus and beyond. The granting of doctoral degrees is however autonomous to each faculty.
The doctoral candidate must successfully complete examination prerequisites in a scope totalling at least 20 ECTS credits (C). Besides a mandatory module on advanced professional and technical skills (5 C) the candidate chooses out of further modules ranging from research till scientific teaching.
One primary requirement is identifying a professor who agrees to supervise your thesis, and will need to provide documentation confirming this agreement.
