Digital Workshop "Teaching and Knowledge Production in Migration Studies in Contexts of the Authoritarian Turn"
05.-06.03.2026, online via Zoom
Migration is currently one of the most controversial topics and is being misused by authoritarian movements worldwide for their anti-democratic agenda. Migration studies themselves face challenges from antiscientific discourses to illiberalism questioning the field’s legitimacy and the researchers’ integrity. The digital workshop of the ENLIGHT thematic network “Imagine” engages with these political, social and cultural dynamics. It aims at an exchange within the network and with renown guest speakers on the current state of attacks on migration research in Europe.
In particular, the workshop focusses on teaching practices and knowledge production: What effects do the increased politicization of migration (studies) have in classrooms? How can these developments be addressed in teaching and the development of curricula? What kinds of tools and resources can critical migration research develop to support conducting research in challenging times? What role can migration researchers take in shaping representations and governance of migration beyond academia (knowledge-transfer, policy advise)?
