Mirjam Künkler has been an examiner or main advisor on the following Ph.D. Dissertations: "The Contentious Politics Of Educational Equity In Iran," "Symmetry of Interest: Turkish-Iranian Relations since 1979," "An Institutional History Of The Iranian Construction Jihad: From Inception To Institutionalization (1979-2011)," "Institutionalizing Religion. Islamic Religious Authorities and Support for Democracy in the Middle East," "The Transformation of Religious Authority of the Ulama and Islamic Law in the Volga-Ural Muslim Community under Russian Imperial Rule," and "Shi'i Islamism and Gender in Iraq: The life and work of Bint al-Huda in the memory and agenda of Shi'i women's activism post-2003."

She has also served as external examiner of PhD Dissertations at Columbia University, the Free University of Berlin, and the European University Institute in Florence.


Mirjam Künkler's Ph.D. student Eric Lob ("An Institutional History Of The Iranian Construction Jihad: From Inception To Institutionalization (1979-2011") received the Award for the Best Doctoral Dissertation by the Foundation of Iranian Studies in 2013, and her student Autumn Patterson ("Rethinking Laiklik In Turkey: The Bureaucratization Of Islamic Education") the award for the best M.A. Thesis in Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University in 2015.
