PhD Kristina Sehlin MacNeil: Sámi Connections to Land and Extractive Violence

Abstract

Sámi in Sweden are heavily impacted by extractive industry activities like mining, forestry, hydro and wind power that want access to Sámi lands. In addition tourism and effects of climate change are complicating situations for traditional Sámi livelihoods like reindeer herding. Kristina Sehlin MacNeil will talk about impacts that loss of land have on Sámi people through a framework of cultural, structural and extractive violence, including some negative consequences such as lateral violence.

PhD Kristina Sehlin MacNeil ist Research Fellow bei Várdduo/Center for Sámi Research an der Universität Umeå, Schweden. Seit 2019 arbeitet sie im Projekt Damage Done: Indigenous experience of and recommendations for energy production und leitet seit 2021 das Projekt Lateralt våld: Effekter av yttre tryck på urfolks- och lokalsamhällen (Laterale Gewalt: Auswirkungen von externem Druck auf indigene und lokale Gemeinschaften).

Zu ihren Forschungsinteressen gehören asymmetrische Konflikte und Machtbeziehungen zwischen indigenen Völkern und Rohstoffindustrien/Majoritätsgesellschaften; kulturelle, strukturelle, extraktive und laterale Gewalt und ihre Auswirkungen auf indigene und lokale Gemeinschaften; Theorie, Methodik und Ethik in der indigenen Forschung sowie die Verbindungen zwischen Mensch und Land.

Sie hat viel international gearbeitet, vor allem in Australien und ist aktiv in zahlreichen internationalen Netzwerken, darunter ENTAN (European Non-Territorial Autonomy Network) und MinErAl (Knowledge Network on Mining Encounters and Indigenous Sustainable Livelihoods).

Sie ist außerdem Co-Direktorin des Doktorandenkollegs der Fakultät für Geisteswissenschaften (FADC) der Universität Umeå.
