Bachelorarbeit zum Thema "Do floral traits differ between cherry cultivars? (Can these differences be used to strategically attract pollinators?)"

Project significance: Alternatives to conventional agriculture are urgently needed to sustain ecosystem functions and services. Ecological intensification is a promising concept, aiming to improve agricultural system performance and efficiency through actively managing functional biodiversity to sustainably enhance delivery of production-supporting ecosystem services. ...more

Bachelorarbeiten zum Thema "How do drought stress and intercropping affect pollen and nectar traits in faba beans?"

The theses aim to explore how drought stress affects the nectar and pollen production of faba beans (Vicia faba L.) grown in sole stands and intercrops with wheat. The question whether intercropping can prevent negative drought effects on plant traits that determine the crop’s attractiveness to pollinators will be answered. One thesis will focus on nectar traits (volume, sugar concentration), while the other thesis will address pollen traits (amount, vitality) of faba beans. There is also the option of one master thesis analyzing both, pollen and nectar traits (see call for master thesis). ...more

Masterarbeit zum Thema "How do drought stress and intercropping affect pollen and nectar traits in faba beans?"

Adverse climatic conditions, such as drought, greatly impair plant performance, decrease crop yields, disrupt plant-pollinator interactions and threaten important ecosystems services (e.g. food provision and pollination). Diversification measures like intercropping have been shown to provide some natural insurance under extreme conditions. However, knowledge is lacking on how intercropping and environmental stressors interact in their effect on functional crop plant traits that are related to pollinator attraction and thus pollination success and yields. ...more

Masterarbeit zum Thema "Nesting opportunities of ground-nesting wild bees in perennial flower fields"

Wildflower fields are increasingly implemented as an agri-environmental measure. The establishment in agricultural landscapes can be beneficial for wild bees because they can offer a continuous supply of floral resources. However, wild bees are not only in need of foraging sites but also of suitable nesting sites. The aim of the master thesis is therefore to analyze nesting opportunities of ground-nesting wild bees in perennial flower fields....more

Masterarbeit zum Thema "Establishment success of plant species within sown wildflower fields"

Evaluation of new regional seed mixtures (BF 2) for perennial flower strips in Lower Saxony
The establishment of sown wildflower strips or fields is a widely adopted agri-environmental measure to promote the diversity of flower-visiting insects and other arthropods in agricultural landscapes. However, the attractiveness of sown flower fields largely depends on the establishment of the sown plant species and changes in species composition over time. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the development and community assembly of plant species within sown perennial flowers fields (BF 2 mixture) and to analyze the plant species diversity and composition in relation to the sowing date and other environmental factors, such as landscape diversity, soil type or light intensity/exposition of the field. ...more

Masterarbeit zum Thema "Interacting effects of flower strips and landscape diversity on spiders and carabids at the landscape scale"

Semi-natural habitats in agricultural landscapes, such as hedges and flower margins, can promote biodiversity. This includes beneficial organisms that can provide biological pest control in crop fields. However, the effectiveness of semi-natural habitats to support pest predators can depend also on the landscape context.
The aim of these two theses is to explore how recently installed flower strips and the landscape context influence the abundance and diversity of ground-dwelling arthropods in the county of Northeim. ...more
