Financial Requirements and Funding Opportunities
Studying abroad requires careful financial planning. Below you can find information about living expenses, semester contributions and funding opportunities for the M.Sc. Sustainable International Agriculture (SIA).
Financial Requirements
Proof of Financial Resources for Visa Purposes
Students from outside the EU/EEA usually need to provide proof of sufficient financial resources when applying for a student visa. The required amount is currently around €11,900 for one year. One common way to provide this proof is through a blocked account (Sperrkonto). Other forms of financial proof, such as a recognised scholarship, may also be accepted. Please note that the required amount may change. Always check the current requirements with the German embassy.
Estimated Monthly Living Expenses
As a general estimate, students should plan with approximately €990 per month for accommodation, food, health insurance, study materials, phone/internet and personal expenses.
Actual costs may vary depending on housing, lifestyle and individual circumstances.
Tuition Fees and Semester Contribution
There are no regular tuition fees for the M.Sc. Sustainable International Agriculture (SIA). However, students are required to pay a semester contribution before the start of each semester.
The semester contribution for SIA students is approximately €450–500 per semester and is slightly lower than the standard semester contribution at the University of Göttingen.
Payment and Enrolment
The semester contribution is paid exclusively to the University of Göttingen. Students are enrolled at both universities, but no separate payment or re-registration at the University of Kassel is required. The University of Göttingen handles the administrative process.
What Is Included?
The semester contribution is not a tuition fee. It includes administrative fees, student services and a public transport ticket (Deutschlandticket).
Studying in Göttingen and Witzenhausen
The M.Sc. Sustainable International Agriculture is a joint degree programme offered by the University of Göttingen and the University of Kassel. Courses take place both in Göttingen and in Witzenhausen.
Travel between the two study locations does not require an additional train ticket when using regional transport. The semester contribution includes the Deutschlandticket, which allows students to use regional transport throughout Germany. This includes regional train connections between Göttingen and Witzenhausen.
Scholarships and External Funding
Please note that the University of Göttingen and the University of Kassel do not offer its own scholarships for the M.Sc. Sustainable International Agriculture. Admission to the programme does not include financial support. Applicants must therefore ensure that they can finance their studies through external funding, a scholarship or their own financial resources.
Many international students finance their studies through external funding schemes. Applicants are strongly advised to search for suitable funding opportunities as early as possible and to apply separately according to the requirements and deadlines of each scholarship provider. Scholarship application deadlines may be several months before the start of the degree programme. Applicants are therefore strongly encouraged to explore funding opportunities well in advance.
It may also be possible to find a part-time job in Göttingen or Witzenhausen. However, students should not rely on part-time work as their main source of funding, especially during the first semester.
