Press release: Many first-year students at the University of Göttingen

No. 147 - 26.10.2026

Proportion of international students rises again – two new degree programmes

At the University of Göttingen, including the University Medical Centre (UMG), around 4,440 students have so far enrolled as new students at the start of the 2026/2027 winter semester. Of these, 3,027 are enrolled in their first semester at a German university. The number of new enrolments thus remains at a high level. The provisional total number of students currently stands at 26,658. Up to 27,000 students are expected as the semester progresses. The proportion of international students has risen again to 19.3 per cent, up from 18.5 per cent last year.

“We warmly welcome all students, and in particular all those newly enrolled for the 2026/27 winter semester,” says Professor Max Wardetzky, Vice-President for Studies and Teaching. “The wide variety of our degree programmes attracts many first-year students. Furthermore, our internationally connected university remains attractive to students from all over the world, as demonstrated by the steadily growing proportion of international students. There is considerable interest in studying in Göttingen.”

By the end of the application deadline on 15 July 2026, over 6,000 valid applications had been received for the 24 undergraduate programmes currently subject to local admission quotas. With an average of 3.7 applications per place on a programme with admission quotas, demand remains high.

Law is particularly in demand in the first semester, with just over 326 first-year students, followed by Business Administration and Agricultural Sciences, each with around 180, and Forestry, with 172 first-year students. There are also larger cohorts of between 100 and 200 new students in the first semester in Medicine, Social Sciences, Psychology, Biology, the dual-subject Bachelor’s programme in Political Science, and the Teacher Training programme in English.

The University of Göttingen offers a total of 98 undergraduate degree programmes. New additions this year include the dual-subject Bachelor’s programme in Applied Statistics and the doctoral programme leading to a PhD at the Faculty of Theology.
